Notes find their neighbours

Knowledge base, part 3 of 4

The last release let notes point at each other. This one lets them notice each other first. Two things arrive: a Related panel that says you wrote about this in ‹Kitchen renovation budget›, and a way to turn a line in a note into a task while you are still looking at the note.

What’s new

Related. Under a note, on the Adaptive and Private plans, is a short list of the things in your account that are about the same subject — other notes, tasks, projects — ranked by how close they are. Each has two buttons. Link writes a link to it into your note at the cursor, exactly as typing [[ would, so the connection lands in the graph the same way. Dismiss takes it off the list and it will not be suggested for that note again.

Which model your choices train. Every Link and every Dismiss is a lesson. On the Adaptive plan your choices help train the shared model that everyone’s suggestions come from, so accepting a good link improves the suggestions for other people too. On the Private plan your choices train a model that is yours alone and never touch the shared one. The panel looks identical on both plans; the difference is entirely in who learns from you. The Free plan keeps explicit links and gets no suggestions.

A checklist item becomes a task. Write - [ ] Ring the fitter in a note and a Checklist section appears beneath the editor with a button beside it: Make it a task. Press it and a task with that text is created where the note lives — in the same project or area, or in your inbox if the note is unfiled. The line in your note becomes a link to the task, and the note gains a connection to it.

The note keeps reading true. Once an item has become a task, the Checklist section shows the task’s own state, not the box in the text. Tick the task off in its project and the note shows it ticked. An idea became a task without leaving the page it was thought on, and the page stays honest about what happened to it.

How it works

Suggestions come from the same in-house engine that already proposes areas for your tasks: your titles and bodies are turned into vectors and compared, and the nearest ones are offered. Nothing leaves your account to be ranked — the comparison is against your own things only, and it runs when you open the note.

A dismissed or accepted suggestion is stored as a pattern in the pool the engine already learns from, tagged with whose pool it belongs to. That is the whole tier line: Adaptive writes to your pool and the shared one; Private writes to yours only.

Extracting a task waits for the server to give the new task its permanent address before it rewrites your note, so the link written into your text is never one that could break a moment later.
